Ask David. He is a right below the elbow amputee and we just fit him with a myoelectric hand with an I Limb hand.  He can’t get the smile off of his face.  The arm is secure, comfortable, and he can operate the fingers and wrist smoothly with no cables or harness.  He only has to think about flexing the appropriate muscles and the hand moves accordingly and naturally.

Now he is beginning occupational therapy to learn the advanced activities and nuances of how to use the new hand.

David’s goal is to be the myoelectric poster boy.

As I am flying to the AAOP meeting in Chicago I am reading e-mailing comments on which technology would be appropriate or inappropriate to fit in Haiti. But what is appropriate here? Elevated vacuum has a multitude of advantages for those who have the necessary gadget tolerance to accept it and work with it every day. And if the person lives remotely, it will require more maintenance visits than simpler systems. It will cost more initially and in the long run.
